If I like it, I will do it.

This whole list thing is very meh. Although I have liked the movies/tv shows thus far. I can tell you right now the book selection has gone off the rails. I just wasn’t excited about the options. I hate plugging through books, that’s why it took me months to get through one book, it felt like I trial. I don’t read like that. I like to blow through books like I blow through bags of Cadbury Mini Eggs. Since I last blogged I’ve read the following:

Dune – Frank Herbert
Dune Messiah – Frank Herbert
The Gates – John Connoly
lost boy, lost girl – Peter Straub

I loved the two Dune books. The first one was a bit confusing to get into, but once I hit my stride I finished it quickly, the second book Dune Messiah I read in about two days. If you’ve never heard of Dune, you clearly aren’t a big enough nerd. Dune has been called the best Sci Fi novel of all time. I don’t know if this is true, because of my limited Sci-Fi experience, but it was pretty damn good. It’s about a desert planet inhabited by huge sandworms.  Dune, the planet, is the source of this stuff called Spice that everyone in the universe is addicted to. The main character, Paul, is sent there with his parents – his dad is a duke. Anyway some bad guys kill his dad and overthrow the government and Paul and his mom flee into the desert. There they hook up with this band of desert people called the Fremen. That’s basically all I can tell you without giving the whole book/series away. I look forward to reading Dune – Children of Dune – as soon as my library gets it in. I’m not sure how many in the series  I will read, there are a lot of them, but a number of my friends have said that the books really go down hill after the third installment.

The Gates was a great, quick, YA read. It was fun to read something that I know I would have loved equally as much if I’d read it as a 12 year old. It’s about a young boy who has to battle demons after the gates of hell are opened up due to a mishap with the Hadron Collider. I know, right? Doesn’t that sound awesome? Go check it out. I just got another one of John Connoly’s books – The Book of Lost Things – started it today, and it looks equally as awesome. I love finding new authors!

Finally, I read lost boy, lost girl by Peter Straub. For the life of me I don’t understand why I haven’t read anything by Straub until now. He co-wrote the Talisman and Black House with Stephen King, both of which are in my top favorite books ever. This books was super scary. It gave me actual goosebumps while reading it. The back cover of the book had a review by Neil Gaiman and it said something like “This is a mystery novel, a seriel killer novel, a haunted house story, and a ghost story all in one”. And yes, it was. I don’t know what to say about this book without giving it away. Straub is one of those authors who starts right out of the gate with action and little set up. I love that. I just got another one of this books from the library called In The Night Room. It looks equally as awesome.

So, basically I’ve discovered if I stick within the generes I like – mystery, horror, and apparently Sci-Fi I can bring my book count up to about 2 a week! That my friends, is right where I want to be. Also, I”m thinking of joining good reads or something to keep track a bit easier.

Peace Out, Girl Scouts.
